Tilt and the mental game
What tilt is, how to spot it in yourself before it costs you, and the habits that keep your head clear at the table.
Tilt is playing worse because of your emotions: frustration after a bad beat, anger at an opponent, the urge to win back a loss right now. Every player tilts. The difference between good and bad players is how quickly they notice and what they do about it.
What tilt looks like
- Playing hands you would normally fold, "because you are due".
- Calling big bets to "keep them honest" when you know you are beaten.
- Raising bigger and bluffing more to win the money back quickly.
- Replaying the last bad beat in your head instead of watching the table.
- Moving up in stakes to recover losses.
Common triggers
- Bad beats: losing a big pot as a big favourite. AA losing to a gutshot on the river.
- Losing streaks: card-dead for an hour, or several coolers in a row.
- Opponents: a player who needles you, or who wins by playing badly.
- Outside the game: being tired, hungry, stressed or drinking.
What to do about it
Before you play
- Set a stop-loss and a time limit and stick to them. See bankroll management.
- Do not play tired or upset. Poker magnifies whatever mood you sit down with.
At the table
- Notice the signs. If your heart is racing or you are replaying a hand, you are tilting.
- Take a break. Stand up, walk away for ten minutes, drink water. Online, sit out a few hands.
- Remember the maths. Getting your money in as a favourite and losing is a good decision with a bad result. Over thousands of hands, those decisions win. See expected value.
- Quit while it is still a choice. Leaving after a big loss is not weakness; it is protecting your bankroll from your worst version of yourself.
After you play
- Review decisions, not results. Ask "did I make the right play with what I knew?", not "did I win?".
- Write it down. A sentence about what set you off helps you spot it next time.
In a home game
Tilt in a friends' game shows up as chasing losses with rebuys and as needling the player who just beat you. Rebuying is free on Home Game, but your mood is not: if you find yourself rebuying to "get even", call it a night. The game will be there next week.
